The ice cube tray is a common item that you usually don’t think twice about. However, there are actually many inventive ways to use this basic item in your home. If you’ve upgraded to a fridge with an icemaker you might even have some spare ice cube trays lying around, or they can be bought inexpensively. Here are three new uses for the ice cube tray.
Jewelry Organizer
When you’re rushing around getting ready in the morning the last thing you need is to be searching high and low for your earrings. An ice cube tray jewelry organizer is the ideal solution to keep your jewelry neat and easy to find. Simply place each piece in one of the cubes; earrings, rings and even thin bracelets fit neatly.
The Sterilite Set of Two Ice Cube Trays is designed with a unique stacking feature that makes it well-suited for organizing jewelry. The trays nest neatly when not in use, but when they are stacked in alternating directions they do not fall into each other. So if you have a lot of jewelry you can stack multiple trays to store it all. Ice cube trays are also a great way to display watches for easy access, women’s watches fit snugly into the cubes.
Seed Starting Tray
With a little bit of handiwork an ice cube tray can be a great place to grow your seedlings. Drill a hole in the bottom of each cube with a 1/8 inch drill bit to allow the excess water to drain. This will ensure that the seeds and roots don’t get over watered which could cause them to rot. With stacking ice cube trays it is easy to use a second tray to contain the water that drains through the holes.
Fill the tray with a seed starter mix and plant the seeds. A toothpick is a great tool to make the perfect size holes for your seeds. Refer to the directions on the package for how deep to sow the seeds.
Water your seeds regularly and place them in a sunny window sill or under grow lights and your seedlings should pop up in no time.
Pre-portioned Cookies
The frozen portioned cookie dough from the grocery store is convenient, easy and tasty. But, with this simple ice cube tray trick you can get the same delicious results at home. Start by making cookie dough, you can follow this recipe for classic chocolate chip cookies, or switch it up. Making them at home gives you the flexibility to add other ingredients like M&Ms, peanut butter chips and more.
Once you’ve created your custom cookie mix take an ice cube tray and fill each cube with cookie dough. Store the tray in the freezer and pull out a cookie cube to bake whenever you like, they’ll be even better than the store bought ones.
